摘要 / Abstract:
One of the world’s largest pilgrimage patterns is found in reference to the Four Sacred Mountains. The number of participants who visit them each year rivals that of Mecca in Islam. The spiritual force behind the popularity of the mountain sites has been dependent on the concept of the “presence” of a major Bodhisattva on each of the peaks. Such veneration of Bodhisattvas is unique to these Chinese places. Understanding the nature of this massive pilgrimage network is essential for religious studies.
